This week’s spotlight is on Shawn Calvin, Director of Interior Design, InFORM Studio.  Shawn is the Chair for CREW Detroit Sponsorship Committee.  With her on-going dedication, leadership and commitment, the CREW Detroit Sponsorship Committee offers exposure, marketing, publicity and visibility opportunities within CREW Detroit for sponsor organizations in the local commercial real estate industry. The committee reviews the sponsorship levels and sponsor benefits each year to ensure sponsors are receiving measurable benefits for their sponsorship dollars. Committee members are encouraged to remain engaged with sponsors throughout the year to ensure they are satisfied and would like to continue partnering with CREW. The committee is also responsible for executing the Annual Sponsorship reception.

Name the app you can’t live without. Why?
Pinterest - I source a lot of design, fashion and event inspiration from the app.

What character trait do you most admire?
Trust is really important to me. Someone who is trustworthy tends to also possess many other admirable characteristics.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I started tap dancing at 2-1/2 years old. I was still in diapers. I haven't put my tap shoes on in a long time, but I'm sure it's similar to riding a bike, right?!

What is the best advice you have ever been given?
I have a bachelor's degree in fine arts (University of Michigan 2008) with a concentration in product and graphic design. I once had a professor tell me that I could spend as much time and energy as I wanted concepting a product design and nail down every detail in the fabrication, but once the product left me it will be in someone else's hands and they will find their own way to use the product regardless of how I intended them to use it. Being mindful of the end-user and their perspective has always been something I am passionate about to this day while designing commercial interior spaces.

What was the biggest thing, business or personal, you accomplished this year?
Haven't quite accomplished it just yet, but I'm working on growing a little human! Baby Calvin/Calbus is due 11/11/2021.

Who is your favorite Superhero? Why?
My favorite superhero would have to be Elastigirl from The Incredibles. She's a brave, fearless, Supermom trying to keep her family and the world safe!

Is there a charitable cause you support? If so, what makes them so important to you?
I am the founding member and President of Ladies, Wine & Design Detroit. Started in 2015 by Jessica Walsh, after concluding that women control 80% of consumer spending, yet only 3% of creative directors are female and only 5% of creative industry CEO's are female; she wanted to change the statistics for underrepresented creatives by providing mentorship & workshops, and create a space for dialogue around why. We host bi-monthly salon events in and around the City of Detroit in partnership with sponsors. There is no membership fee to join. Most events are first-come, first-serve and free to attend.

What is the most important thing we should know about you?
Oh man...this one is tough. Out of all the things to know, I think one of the most important would be that I am dedicated and passionate about design. I truly love helping clients unveil solutions to their personal and professional spaces that just make daily life more enjoyable.
