Leadership Spotlight: Jamie Millspaugh – Co-Chair, Professional Development

Jamie Millspaugh is Co-Chair of the CREW Detroit Professional Development Committee and Director of Interior Design at Neumann/Smith Architecture.  Jamie credits CREW with giving her the opportunity to meet others in the CRE industry that she would not have otherwise. The Professional Development committee creates and host programs from which members can derive professional growth and development.  The Committee Co-Chair is responsible for supporting the Committee Chair in creating and maintaining the committee’s task list related to program and goal and objectives, managing member assignments, preparing board reports, and upholding the Network standards at the chapter level.

Why did you join CREW? And how long have you been in CREW? I joined CREW to in 2008. Early in my career I had attended a number of CREW industry events and was inspired by the professional women I met within the organization. I and found the programs worthwhile and instantly wanted to be a part of the organization.

Why is CREW important to you? CREW is important to me as it provides a constant reminder to focus on my professional goals as well as personal growth through networking. The programs and networking opportunities throughout the year help to keep me connected to the industry. The network of professionals I have met through CREW over the years has been a sounding board in times when I have needed advice, guidance or just wanted to bounce an idea off of another professional. Serving on a committee, has helped me to become a better leader in and outside of my organization.

To your company? Neumann Smith has always been a huge supporter of CREW and annually supports the organization through sponsorship and employee membership.

What has CREW done for you? Personally and Professionally? CREW has connected me with many amazing professionals that I am happy to call friends. I truly feel that my CREW network is my support team and can always count on them to give me advice in my best interest. CREW has given the opportunity to learn and grow as a leader outside of my organization.

Why should people within the CRE industry join CREW? Others should join CREW if they are looking for an organization that will help them Learn about growing as a professional in our industry, meet other professionals that will support their Network and Grow as an individual personally and professionally.

Can you share a #crewsuccess story? Job Opportunity? Project Opportunity?  As a young professional I enjoyed many of the programs especially those that involved panel discussions with peers in our industry. One in particular I remember, was a fifth Friday event where I learned about move management and change management for organizations. The speakers were very professional and knowledgeable and I saw the benefit of connecting with them to better support the needs of our clients. I connected with one of them and have worked on many successful projects over the years.

3 things I wish I had known to elevate my professional career.

  1. I wish I had joined a committee within CREW earlier in my career. The committee has helped me to develop closer relationships with other members and have a better understanding of how I can use the Network to further my professional career and leadership skills.
  2. I wish I could have acknowledged that my failures could develop into my greatest successes if I focus on learning and growing from all situations.
  3. I wish I had purposefully selected mentors at a younger age that would guide give me other perspectives on personal and professional paths.

How have you been involved in with CREW? Committees; Board? I have served on the Professional Development committee for 4 years and have been the Co-Chair for the past year and a half. Our committee is newer to the Detroit network allowing our committee to develop a playbook and strategic plan to grow the committee and offer the members of the organization the benefit of professional development opportunities.

What advice would you give a new Member?  My advice would be to get involved in a committee. This will allow them to fully understand the organization and the network possibilities.

Who was your CREW Sponsor?  My CREW sponsor was Kathy Buck, a CREW member from Neumann Smith. Kathy is a peer of mine at Neumann Smith and invited me to events prior to becoming a member.
